South African Tourism Welcomes United’s Nonstop Service to Johannesburg

United Airlines is set to launch nonstop service from San Francisco to Johannesburg on United Express. This will be United 1 and will be the first time that the airline has had nonstop service to South Africa.

Passengers can now enjoy nonstop service to Johannesburg from United’s New York hub. United is also the first US airline to offer nonstop service to South Africa’s capital city from Newark, New Jersey.

United Airlines’ recent announcement that they will be launching a nonstop service to Johannesburg, South Africa, has been applauded by the tourism industry, and not just because it will open up international travel to a country that has a long history of sport and tourism. The new flights between Newark and Johannesburg will be operated on the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, which features 48 United Polaris business-class seats, 88 United Economy Plus seats and 116 United Economy seats. South Africa reopened to tourism in November 2024, with a requirement that foreign travelers provide proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test performed no more than 72 hours prior to arrival.
